SONIC YOUTH

Sonic Youth adalah band rock alternatif asal Amerika Serikat yang dibentuk di New York City pada tahun 1981. Anggota-anggotanya adalah Thurston Moore (vokal dan gitar), Lee Ranaldo (vokal dan gitar), Kim Gordon (vokal, bass, gitar), Mark Ibold (bass), and Steve Shelley (drum).
Pada awal karier mereka, Sonic Youth diasosiasikan dengan gerakan musik dan seni No Wave di New York City. SON OF ELVIS

Sons of Elvis was a post-grunge group active in the early 1990s, best known for their hit single, "Formaldehyde".
Sons of Elvis were founded in New York by three Cleveland natives, guitarist Tim Parnin, bassist Dave Hill and drummer Pat Casa. The trio recruited vocalist John Borland and soon became a hot prospect on the New York punk scene. Just after recording their debut Glodean, Sons of Elvis signed with Priority, which released the album soon after.

History

Sons of Elvis was formed by musicians from Cleveland, Ohio.^[1] After winning some local airplay in Cleveland and building a small following, they relocated to New York City so that three of the members could attend college, at Fordham University in the Bronx.^[2] While there, two of the members also wrote a well received weekly music column, Ear Wax, for Fordham's alternative newspaper, The Paper. After a bidding war, they signed to small independent record label American Empire to release Glodean, but the label went out of business quickly after signing them.^[2] Priority Records then picked up the group and released the Mrs. White disc (consisting mainly of tracks from Glodean) before re-releasing Glodean in 1995. Lead single "Formaldehyde" received airplay at radio and on MTV, and was also featured on the soundtrack of the feature film Higher Learning, by director John Singleton. Glodean peaked at #23 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart in 1995

Formed from the ashes of Jeff and Stone's previous band Mother Love Bone and the Temple Of The Dog tribute project (featuring a young Eddie Vedder on a number of tracks), Pearl Jam were catapulted straight to international superstardom with the release of the album "Ten" and the single 'Alive'. One of the Seattle grunge scene a-list bands, their star faded considerable when that scene fell out of fashion.

This appears to have suited the band fine as they've continued to record increasingly experimental music with their line-up almost intact (they have had a number of drummers over the years - Dave Krusen, Dave Abbruzzese, Jack Irons and, now, the drummer who played on their original demos and with Temple of the Dog - Matt Cameron, formerly of Soundgarden and Smashing Pumpkins, The). In 1995, they played as the backing band on Neil Young's "Mirrorball" album and the subsequent tour.

Among the band members' many side projects over the years are Brad (Stone Gossard); Mad Season & Rockfords, The (Mike McCready); Three Fish (Jeff Ament); Wellwater Conspiracy, The (Matt Cameron).

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS

Stone Temple Pilots, often abbreviated to STP, is an American rock band from San Diego, California that consists of Scott Weiland (lead vocals), brothers Robert DeLeo (bass guitar, vocals) and Dean DeLeo (guitar), and Eric Kretz (drums, percussion).^[1] The band's early hard rock, grunge-reminiscent style of music found them immediate success in 1992 with the release of their debut album Core. Further releases from the band have shown a variety of influences, and as such the band is considered to transcend the genre barrier.
Core, certified 8× platinum by the RIAA, drove the band to popularity.^[2] STP went on to become one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1990s, selling nearly 40 million records worldwide,^[3] including 17.5 million units in the United States,^[4] before their dissolution in 2003. The band has had 16 top ten singles on the Billboard rock charts, eight of which peaked at #1,^[5] and one #1 album for Purple in 1994.^[6]^[7] That same year, the band won a Grammy for "Best Hard Rock Performance" for the song "Plush" from the album Core.^[8] Stone Temple Pilots were also ranked #40 on VH1's The 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.^[9]
After Weiland's five-year stint as the frontman of Velvet Revolver and the DeLeo brothers' involvement with the Army of Anyone project, Stone Temple Pilots reunited in April 2008 with the successful 2008 Stone Temple Pilots Reunion Tour^[3] and the band's sixth studio album Stone Temple Pilots was released in 2010.^[10]

SOUNDGARDEN

Soundgarden was a Grammy Award winning American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984 by lead singer and drummer Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. Matt Cameron became the band's permanent drummer in 1986 while bassist Ben Shepherd became a permanent replacement for Yamamoto in 1990. Soundgarden was one of the key archetypes in the creation of grunge, a style of alternative rock that developed in Seattle and was based around the band's record label Sub Pop. Soundgarden was the first grunge band to sign to a major label, though the band did not achieve commercial success until Seattle contemporaries Nirvana and Pearl Jam popularized grunge in the early 1990s.

Alice in Chains Discography

Alice in Chains is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1987 by guitarist Jerry Cantrell and original lead vocalist Layne Staley. Although widely associated with grunge music, the band's sound incorporates heavy metal and acoustic elements. Since its formation, Alice in Chains has released four studio albums, three EPs, two live albums, four compilations, and two DVDs. The band is known for its distinct vocal style which often included the harmonized vocals of Staley and Cantrell.
Alice in Chains rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with other Seattle bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. The band was one of the most successful music acts of the 1990s, selling over 35 million albums worldwide, and over 15 million in the US alone. The band achieved two number-one Billboard 200 albums (Jar of Flies and Alice in Chains), 14 top ten songs on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and eight Grammy Award nominations.
Although never officially disbanding, Alice in Chains was plagued by extended inactivity due to substance abuse, culminating in the death of Layne Staley in 2002. Alice in Chains reunited in 2005 with new lead vocalist William DuVall and released Black Gives Way to Blue, their first studio album in 14 years, on September 29, 2009.

HOW TO BE GRUNGE

Study the roots of grunge.

Grunge was heavily influenced by Sonic Youth and the Pixies. Also, the Beatles and many other pop bands as well.^[1]^[2]
Grunge was also influenced by heavy metal of the early 70s, particularly Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.
Punk also played a role in the development of grunge.

Protest the mainstream by opting out.

This is a key tenet of grunge. While punk and heavy metal objected to pop culture by catering to the opposite in flashy ways (e.g. mohawks, lyrics about Satan), grungers objected by simply not participating. They didn't care to shock people, and they didn't go out of their way to "nonconform". They just poked fun at mainstream America, and didn't bend to its ideals. A true grunger doesn't care to draw attention to him or herself, and doesn't do things with the motivation of raising eyebrows.

Don't give a %*&^ about your appearance.

At all. Spend minimal time shopping and grooming. The customizing and tailoring that you see in DIY punk culture and the carefully chosen clothes you see in metalhead culture are nonexistent in grunge. Don't even go out of your way to wear flannel. Grungers wore it because it was readily available in the Pacific Northwest climate, and comfortable. So wear whatever is comfortable, and requires the least time and money to put on your body.

Stop caring about being admired.

In fact, loathe it. The people who made grunge famous actually detested fame, and didn't want the huge following that many musicians dreamt of. Recognize that fame and popularity are shallow forms of validation that have no value to you, and can be an obstacle to your pursuit of music (or whatever else you're passionate about).

Try to be good but don't flatter yourself in front of other people.

You (or anyone, Grunge or not) don't need to do it, and it only shows low self esteem and that you want to be admired.

Try to know as many grunge bands and grunge history as you can and want to.

If you just know Black Hole Sun and/or Kurt Cobain you're a poser.

Don't just listen to grunge music.

Admit what other kind of music you like. Labeling yourself will only make you a poser. Whatever you do listen to though, make sure the person has talent.

Don't be a "drama queen" or a "drama king".

It is okay to express how you feel, as long as it is real and you are being real with others. The frontmen/frontwomen from many of the grunge bands were able to express their feelings with raw reality and not with a synthetic, overly dramatized singing voice. They connected better with their audience by trusting them enough to be real with them, and not come off as an "unreachable" figure".

Listen to bands like Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, The Sons Of Elvis, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Green River, etc.
